Anuloma Viloma is an alternative breathing technique that improves the functioning of the respiratory system and boosts the functioning of the brain. Anuloma in sanskrit means alternate. It involves alternate breathing with the right and the left nostril while the other is closed. It is also known as Nadhi Shudhi pranayama or Nadhi shodhana pranayama which is sanskrit for breathing technique that clears the nasal cycle.

Steps to follow the anuloma viloma breathing technique:

The anuloma viloma breathing technique can be practiced by sitting in the three sitting positions- vajrasana, sukhasana and padmasana.The mouth should be closed while practising the yoga to avoid breathing with the mouth.

The little finger, ring finger and the thumb are used for this breathing technique.

Step 1:
Bring your little finger and middle finger towards your palm. Keep the thumb of your right hand before the right nostril; and the middle and the little finger before the left nostril.

Step 2:
Close the right nostril with your thumb and inhale through the left nostril.

Step 3:
Hold your breath for a time that is equal to four times of the time that you took to inhale. The ratio of inhalation : holding the breath must be, 1:4.

Step 4:
Close the left nostril with your ring finger and little finger, and exhale through your right nostril. The ratio of inhalation to exhalation must be 1:2.

Step 5:
Inhale through the right nostril this time.

Step 6:
Hold your breath, this time closing both the nostrils for the same time as previously, ie in the same ratio of 1:4.

Step 7:
Exhale through the left nostril taking twice the time as you took for the inhaling ie, in the ratio of 1:2.
