Cold,cough and flu are viral infections caused by around 300 viruses and take about 7-10 days to heal. They are usually accompanied by painful symptoms like severe headache, sore throat, body aches and running nose. There is no medication that can kill the viruses but we can reduce the frequency of colds by increasing our immunity against the viruses. There some wonderful natural concoctions that alleviate the symptoms and reduce the frequency of their occurrence. Some of them are:
Garlic tea
Garlic is an immune enhancer and when you take garlic in the form of tea, or eat raw garlic it can help in reducing the frequency of catching cold, cough and flu. You can make garlic tea at home in a simple procedure. Peel 2-3 cloves of garlic and add them to boiling water. After five minutes of boiling, add raw honey to it that can make it sweet. You can now drink this tea which has added immune enhancing properties of honey including garlic.
Red onions cough syrup
Onions have been known since ancient times for their healing properties, some of them being anti-inflammatory, de-congestant and anti-oxidant. A cough syrup can be prepared at home using onions. We soak onions in a mixture of water and honey (as a sweetener) for about 12 – 14 hours. The concoction that is left over after removing onions can be used as an effective cough syrup that can cure cold, cough and flu.
Lemon juice
Lemon juice when mixed with raw honey in warm water can help in reducing the symptoms of cold and cough. Lemon with its vitamin C content is known to have anti oxidant properties that can help in increasing the immunity and thereby fight cold faster. Honey is also known to kill viruses and speed up the recovery.
Chicken soup
Chicken soup has been used since olden days as a remedy for fighting cough and cold. This is because it is rich in anti oxidants that kill the viruses causing cold by enhancing the immunity of the body.
Mullein tea
Mullein tea that can be prepared at home acts as an expectorant by removing the chest congestion that causes cough. It relaxes the chest muscles and thereby releases trapped mucus. This results in soothing of a sore throat. Mullein tea can be made at home by boiling the herb in water for some time and drinking the tea. You can also add honey to sweeten the tea.
